Les Wampas, Beck & Morrissey: New Albums & Artist Guide
French punk rock band Les Wampas have a selection of albums newly available, alongside releases from Beck, James Hoare, and Morrissey, according to recent reports.
Formed in Paris in 1983, Les Wampas initially categorized their music as “Yé-yé-punk,” a blend of punk rock and 1960s French pop. Their debut album, Tutti Frutti, was released in 1986. The band gained wider recognition with their third album, Les Wampas vous aiment (Les Wampas love you), released in 1990. This album featured the single “Petite Fille,” which received airplay on the French television channel M6, and included the popular track “Ce soir c’est Noël.”
Following the success of Les Wampas vous aiment, the band signed with the major label BMG. However, the group faced a significant loss in December 1991 with the suicide of guitarist Marc Police.
In 1993, Les Wampas recorded Simple et Tendre at London’s Roundhouse and Abbey Road studios, incorporating the London Session Orchestra into the album’s sound.
The band’s current lineup includes Didier Wampas, Jean-Mi Lejoux, Tony Truant, Niko Wampas, and Effello. Former members include the late Marc Police, Ben Sam, and Phil Almosnino.
Les Wampas maintain an official website at www.wampas.com and have a presence on YouTube Music.
