A modern Christmas classic has risen to teh top of the charts. Leona Lewis‘s 2013 hit “One More Sleep” has been revealed as the most-streamed Christmas song released in the 21st century in the United Kingdom, according to the official Charts Company. The song’s enduring popularity signals a shift in the landscape of festive favorites, traditionally dominated by decades-old recordings.
The recognition of “One More Sleep” as a leading modern Christmas song reflects a broadening of the festive canon, as newer tracks gain traction alongside established classics. This is significant for artists seeking to establish enduring holiday hits and for the music industry as it navigates evolving listening habits. Martin Talbot, chief executive of Official Charts, stated, ”The canon of Christmas classics is full to bursting with songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. So it is great to see modern classics joining the festive hall of fame - with Leona Lewis’s ‘One More Sleep’ the runaway leader as the biggest new British Christmas cracker of them all. Congratulations Leona.”
The top 10 most-streamed 21st-century Christmas songs also includes The Darkness’s ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End)’ at number six, Sam Smith’s rendition of ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ at seven, Jess Glynne’s ‘This christmas’ at eight, George Ezra’s ‘Come On Home For Christmas’ at nine, and Sam Ryder’s ‘Your Christmas To Me’ at ten.
This proclamation follows the recent reveal of contenders for the 2023 UK Christmas number one single, featuring artists such as taylor Swift, denise Welch, and Tom Fletcher’s paddington The Musical-inspired track, One Of Us. Notably, Lewis previously topped the charts in 2006 with her X Factor winners single, ‘A Moment Like This.’
