Leon Draisaitl Injury: Oilers Star Seeks Treatment in Germany

Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl is receiving treatment for a lower-body injury in Munich, Germany, from Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, a renowned sports physician, the player revealed Saturday.

Draisaitl spoke during a Sky Sports broadcast of a Bayern Munich soccer match, stating, “It will definitely be a few weeks,” and expressing hope that the Oilers can advance far enough in the playoffs for him to return. “I hope we head far enough so I can help the team again,” he said.

The injury occurred during Edmonton’s 3-1 victory over the Nashville Predators on March 15th, sustained from a hard hit by Predators forward Ozzy Wiesblatt, and has sidelined him for the remainder of the regular season. The Oilers have placed him on the injured reserve list.

Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt, nicknamed “Healing Hans,” previously served as Bayern Munich’s team physician from 1977 to 2015 and again from 2017 to 2020. He also held the position of physician for the German national men’s soccer team from 1995 to 2018. He has treated numerous high-profile athletes, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Usain Bolt, and Kobe Bryant.

Draisaitl indicated he would remain in Munich until Tuesday. Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews previously sought treatment from Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt for an undisclosed injury, and former Carolina Hurricanes player Max Pacioretty also utilized his services while recovering from an Achilles injury.

The 30-year-old Draisaitl has been a key player for the Oilers, and his absence is a significant blow as the team prepares for the postseason.
