Leipzig Book Fair 2026: Awards, Fantasy & Author Highlights

March 21, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Frankfurt am Main – The German book industry celebrated its annual awards ceremony Saturday at the Frankfurt Book Fair, with Susanne Abel’s emotionally resonant novel, “Du musst meine Hand fester halten, Nr. 104,” taking the top prize in the Hörbuch des Jahres (Audiobook of the Year) category. The award recognizes both Abel, the author, and Hörbuch Hamburg, the production company behind the audiobook.

The BookBeat Awards, presented for the first time at the fair, are determined by analyzing millions of listening hours logged on the BookBeat platform in Germany. Lilly Lucas was named Autor:in des Jahres (Author of the Year), acknowledging her strong connection with readers on the audiobook platform, according to a statement released by BookBeat. Tahsim Durgun’s “Mama, bitte lern Deutsch” was recognized as Hörbuch-Debüt des Jahres (Audiobook Debut of the Year), published by Argon Verlag.

Vera Teltz was honored as Sprecher:in des Jahres (Voice Artist of the Year), prompting a visibly emotional reaction as she accepted the award. Moderator Henrike Tönnes used the occasion to advocate for the continued importance of human voice actors, stating, “I wouldn’t have given the award to an AI,” emphasizing the unique qualities a human performer brings to audiobook narration.

Beyond the awards, the Frankfurt Book Fair continued to showcase the enduring popularity of the fantasy genre, with authors like Liza Grimm drawing large crowds. Grimm’s latest operate is described as a blend of “The Hunger Games” and “Avatar,” attracting a significant following on social media, a trend increasingly common among emerging fantasy authors.

Children’s literature also saw strong interest, with Bernhard Hoëcker and Eva von Mühlenfels’ new book, “Paul bekommt kein Kätzchen,” proving popular with young readers and their parents. Hoëcker spent the afternoon signing copies of the book, designed for children aged four and up.

The fair also hosted a live podcast recording of “Die Neue Norm,” which focused on the state of inclusion in Germany. Author Raúl Krauthausen, who uses a wheelchair, participated in the discussion, noting that while Germany’s democratic structures compare favorably to other European nations, accessibility remains a significant challenge. He cited personal experiences, including being denied boarding on a Deutsche Bahn train due to technical issues with a door, as evidence of ongoing barriers. Krauthausen wryly observed that true inclusion would be achieved “Erst wenn ich mit einem Rollstuhl in einem Berliner Doppeldeckerbus oben sitzen kann” (Only when I can sit on the upper deck of a Berlin double-decker bus in a wheelchair).

Despite being the traditionally busiest day of the fair, organizers reported that limiting ticket sales appeared to have prevented overcrowding, allowing attendees to navigate the halls without significant congestion. Author Sebastian Fitzek marked his 20th anniversary as an author with a dedicated stand in Hall 2, combining a sales space with a backdrop for social media content.
