london, ON – A second individual has succumbed to Legionnaires’ disease in London, Ontario, as the outbreak continues to spread, sickening a total of 64 people. Public health officials confirmed the grim update, noting that the latest victim’s age ranged from 23 to 93 years old.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit declared the outbreak on July 8th. Despite extensive efforts, officials have yet to pinpoint the exact source of the bacteria or determine if it is connected to a similar outbreak last year that resulted in two fatalities.On Monday, health officials released a map indicating a general area most affected by the outbreak, encompassing a meaningful portion of the city. While a cluster of cases has been identified, officials emphasize that the overall risk to the broader community remains low, especially for those not considered at higher risk.

Homes and businesses within the affected area are encouraged to remain open and adhere to recommended health and maintenance protocols. residents are not being discouraged from continuing their daily routines in the region. The six-kilometer radius depicted on the map represents the average location of reported cases and is a snapshot in time, with confirmed cases existing outside this designated area.Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the Legionella bacteria, commonly found in water sources like hot tubs, cooling towers, and large plumbing systems. The bacteria are not transmitted person-to-person. Infection occurs when aerosolized bacteria are inhaled.While most exposed individuals do not become ill, some may develop Pontiac fever, a milder, flu-like illness. Older adults, individuals with lung conditions, and those who are immunocompromised are at a higher risk of severe infection. Health officials defended the timeline for releasing the map, citing the need to gather sufficient information to ensure accuracy.
