Legendary Bulgarian Forecaster Mincho Praznikov Dies at 88

Bulgaria is mourning the loss of Mincho Praznikov, a beloved and highly respected meteorologist, who died today at the age of 88. The news was announced by his daughter, Daniela, on her Facebook profile.

“Goodbye, Dad! You were our fortress! I love you remarkably much! Rest in peace,” she wrote.

Born on February 9, 1938, in Dryanovo, Praznikov dedicated his life to the study and forecasting of weather patterns. His family name, Praznikov, originates from a nickname given to his great-grandfather, who frequently used religious holidays as excuses for absences from school, according to family history.

Praznikov’s passion for meteorology began early in his life. He went on to earn a degree in Physics and Meteorology from the Faculty of Physics at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski.” He then spent 22 years as a meteorologist in the Air Force. From 1986 to 2000, he worked at the National Institute of Meteorology, and Hydrology. In December 2000, he joined the private meteorological forecasting firm, TV-MET, where he continued his operate until his death.

Details regarding funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
