LeBron James Ties NBA Games Played Record, Robert Parish Approves | Lakers News

March 20, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

MIAMI – LeBron James extended his unparalleled longevity in the NBA on Thursday night, playing in his 1,611th career game and tying Hall of Famer Robert Parish for the most games played in league history. The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 112-98, with James contributing 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists.

The historic moment occurred against the Heat, the team James led to two championships during his four seasons in Miami (2010-2014). James, 41, entered the game needing only to step onto the court to equal Parish’s record, set on April 9, 1996. He did so after playing through the night following a game in Houston and receiving treatment for arthritis in his left foot.

“If anyone is deserving of breaking the iron man record, I would say LeBron James is,” Parish told ESPN in a phone interview. “Because he takes such quality care of himself. … His approach to fitness and what he puts into his body reflects, or mirrors, how I felt about my fitness and what I ate, how I took care of myself. And so, it’s a testament to not only my longevity, but LeBron’s longevity.”

James, who became the NBA’s first player to reach 50,000 combined regular season and playoff points in March 2025, has consistently emphasized availability as a cornerstone of leadership. “It’s not something I set out to do,” James said last week. “The one thing that I’ve always had in my mind is that you can’t be a leader and you can’t practice what you preach if you’re not available to your teammates. And I’ve always kind of just prided myself on trying to be as available as possible in my career to my teammates, going out on the floor every night and keeping my body intact.”

The Lakers arrived in Miami on a seven-game winning streak, buoyed by James’ recent performance in a 124-116 victory over the Houston Rockets, where he scored 30 points on 13-for-14 shooting, including six dunks. James is currently averaging 21.4 points, 6.8 assists, and 5.6 rebounds this season.

Lakers coach JJ Redick attributed James’ sustained success to his “competitive stamina.” “His ability to put so much focus and intent into his day — that’s how you last, that’s how you improve, that’s how you stay healthy and are available to play in that amount of games,” Redick said before Thursday’s game. He too referenced a mantra often used by Heat president Pat Riley: “Whatever the quote is, ‘Make sure you make the main thing the main thing,’ and he’s made basketball the main thing for a long time.”

Parish, who averaged 3.7 points and 2.1 rebounds in his final season with the Chicago Bulls in 1996-97, acknowledged the inevitability of his record being broken. “Oh, no, no,” Parish said when asked if he thought his record, which stood for nearly 30 years, was unbreakable. “I thought the record would be broken eventually.”

When asked where James ranks among basketball’s all-time greats, Parish responded, “Oh, they got to make room for LeBron. LeBron is an all-time great. They got to pull up an extra chair and tell some guys to slide over.”

James began his 23rd NBA season in November 2025, making his season debut against the Utah Jazz after being sidelined for the first 14 games due to sciatica. He has maintained a streak of 1,293 consecutive games with double-digit scoring.
