Bitdefender Announces Project Reprioritization, Leading to Layoffs in Romania and Globally
bitdefender has notified employees across several departments, including a meaningful number within its Business Solutions Group (BSG) in Romania, of impending layoffs. The company confirmed the restructuring is due to a reprioritization of projects aimed at ensuring “long-term sustainable growth.” While the layoffs are occurring globally, less than 7% of the company’s total workforce is affected.
Based on estimates of 1,600 to 2,400 Bitdefender employees worldwide in 2025, this translates to approximately 112 to 168 positions being eliminated. Company representatives emphasized the decision is not based on individual performance, but rather on streamlining project structures and eliminating redundancies.
The affected employees were informed of the decision on November 12th and 13th, 2025, with contract terminations occurring “by mutual consent of the parties.” Bitdefender is offering compensation packages, transition assistance, and opportunities to explore internal roles.
Despite the restructuring, Bitdefender maintains that Romania remains a crucial location for its operations. The company stated, “Romania remains a central pillar of the company’s global R&D operations, where hundreds of the company’s most talented engineers work.” Bitdefender will continue to invest in innovation and engineering within the country, and all five of its Romanian research and growth centers – located in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, and Târgu mureș – will remain operational. The company insists that local technical departments will not be dissolved and projects will continue in Romania following an internal reallocation of resources.
Bitdefender also clarified that the layoffs are not related to the adoption of Artificial intelligence (AI). The company stated that AI “facilitates growth and innovation, but it is not a substitute for humans,” and has been integrated into its security solutions since 2008. Bitdefender views AI as a tool to accelerate research, improve detection capabilities, and enhance scalability, aiming for a balanced integration of human expertise and artificial intelligence.
The Business Solutions group, the division most impacted by the layoffs, provides threat prevention, detection, and response solutions to over 40,000 organizations globally, including businesses, government entities, and non-profits.
