The extension, believed to be for four years, comes despite a season marked by on-court struggles and off-court controversy.

The Clippers began the 2025-2026 season with a 6-21 record, prompting questions about the direction of the franchise. While the team has since improved its standing and remains in playoff contention, the extension arrives after a period of significant turbulence. Frank, 55, has held the position of Clippers’ front-office president since 2017 and was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2020 following the acquisitions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

The 2020 Executive of the Year award recognized Frank’s success in reshaping the Clippers roster, leading to the franchise’s deepest playoff run during his tenure – a conference finals appearance in 2021 under head coach Tyronn Lue, who was hired by Frank. Yet, recent decisions have drawn scrutiny. A controversial decision to send veteran player Chris Paul home in December sparked criticism and appeared to destabilize the team, according to reports.

Further complicating matters, the Clippers have been navigating allegations of circumventing the NBA’s salary rules by arranging a no-show job for Kawhi Leonard with a team sponsor. Team officials have consistently denied these allegations, but the NBA’s investigation remains ongoing. The timing of the contract extension, coming amidst this investigation, has raised eyebrows within the league.

Lawrence Frank previously served as head coach of the Detroit Pistons and the New Jersey Nets, and as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets. He currently oversees all basketball operations for the Clippers, a role he assumed in 2017. The Clippers finished 49-23 in the pandemic-shortened 2019-2020 season, but have not advanced past the second round of the playoffs since.
