Laurence Ruatti as Frida Kahlo: Moving Show Coming to Lacanau
The Théâtre Molière in Bordeaux, which has hosted a successful run of “Una hora con Frida Kahlo,” will see the play performed for a single night at Salle L’Escoure in Lacanau on March 28th at 8:30 PM, according to local event listings.
The production, featuring Laurence Ruatti in the role of Frida Kahlo, marks a shift in the career of the Lacanau-born actress, who is known for her comedic work. Ruatti, after nearly two decades focused on comedy, described the transition to portraying Kahlo as a discovery of “tragedy,” stating, “I discover really the tragedy, and I adore it.”
“Una hora con Frida Kahlo” was conceived through a collaboration between Ruatti and director Nicolas Delas. Delas, a longtime collaborator with Ruatti since their beginnings in Bordeaux, proposed the solo performance centered on a significant female figure. The choice of Frida Kahlo, according to Ruatti, felt inevitable, as Kahlo “fought all her life to be the most just representation of herself.”
The play draws heavily on Kahlo’s own words, with 90 percent of the dialogue sourced directly from the artist. This approach aims to authentically portray a life marked by physical suffering and resilience. Kahlo contracted polio as a child and, at age 18, suffered severe injuries in a bus accident in 1925, including a fractured spine and a crushed foot, narrowly escaping death.
The production is described as an “ode colorée” that seeks to capture the essence of Kahlo’s artistic world. Ruatti’s performance is presented as a visceral and intimate exploration of the artist’s life, echoing the pain embodied in Kahlo’s work. As one description notes, the performance “throws itself body and soul into this colorful ode which makes tangible all the magic of the Kahlo universe.”
The play is currently scheduled to run at the Théâtre Molière in Bordeaux from March 25th to June 9th, 2026, with tickets starting at €16.50. The single performance in Lacanau offers a local audience the opportunity to experience the production.
