Latvian PM Resigns Following Ukrainian Drone Incursions in Baltic Airspace

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina resigned on Wednesday following a political battle over the breach of national airspace by Ukrainian drones.

The resignation and the subsequent collapse of the Latvian government follow a series of security incidents in which drones entered the country undetected. These incursions are linked to Russian electronic warfare, which has been diverting Ukrainian drones into the airspace of the Baltic states and Finland.

Security Challenges and Fuel Depot Strike

The political fallout was intensified by a specific incident involving a Ukrainian drone strike on an empty fuel depot in the Baltic region. The strike has been cited as a factor prompting the top-level resignation.

The former defense minister addressed the technical difficulties of managing these aerial threats, stating that while Latvia faces security “questions” due to the incursions, there is no “silver bullet” to stop the drones.

The collapse of the Silina administration leaves the Latvian government in a state of transition as the country navigates the security challenges posed by regional electronic warfare operations.
