Jekabpils Hosts Valdis Alksnītis Memorial Suppression Competition, Showcasing Regional Strength
Jekabpils, Latvia – November 12, 2024 – Over 100 athletes from Latvia and Lithuania converged on Jekabpils this weekend for the Zemgale region Latvian Cup competition in suppression, a powerful display of strength dedicated to the memory of Valdis Alksnītis, a celebrated sports master and Honorary Citizen of Jekabpils. the event,held at the Jekabpils Sports center,highlighted the growing popularity of suppression sports in the Baltic region.
The competition saw participation from 16 sports clubs, with Rembates SK ultimately claiming victory in a closely contested team battle. The Jekabpils Sports Center team secured a commendable second place, demonstrating the strength of the local athletes, while Liepaja’s “Libava Powerlifting” team rounded out the top three.
Despite the competition being the seventh stage of the Latvian Cup, Jekabpils residents maintain their leading position in the overall team standings, signaling a consistent performance throughout the season. The event was made particularly poignant by the presence of Valdis Alksnītis’s family – his wife, Livia Alksnite, and daughter, Žanete Alksnīte – honoring his legacy within the sport.
Jekabpils Sports Center Athletes Shine
Several athletes from the Jekabpils Sports Center delivered outstanding individual performances:
- Gold Medalists: Ieva esere Mashevska, Olga Miglāne, Nick Ruze, Kyrylo Pyperko (also 2nd in absolute rating), Aigars Začenkovs, Eduards Mishovs, Židrjus Sabaļauskas (1st in absolute assessment), and Viesturs Brunins.
- Silver Medalists: Irina Britika, esere Romanovska-Balunova, Maria Lapkovska, Eddie Dambran, Ivan Khomenko, Alexander Jersezlavcev, Vyacheslav Naumov, and Aldis Kampans. Natasha Nikitina secured 3rd place in the absolute rating.
- Bronze Medalists: Skaidrīte Voiko, Guna Vīksne, Raivis Mazor, and Damir Mishov.
- Notable Performances: Olga Buce and Katrīna lipska achieved personal records, while Dace Telšinska finished in 4th place.
Looking ahead: The Latvian Cup continues to foster a competitive surroundings for suppression athletes, with the next stage scheduled for December 15th in Riga. This event serves as a crucial stepping stone for athletes aiming to qualify for the European Championships in 2025.
