Latvian Code: ‘Monument of Help’ – A Latvian Charity Shop Story
A charity shop in the Latvian city of Alūksne, dubbed “The Monument of Help,” offers goods for as little as 20 cents, providing a vital social and cultural hub for the community, according to a new documentary released this month.
The film, titled “Palīdzības piemineklis” (Monument of Help) and directed by Ivars Zviedris, is part of the “Latvijas kods” (Latvian Code) documentary strand, which explores contemporary life in Latvia. The shop itself occupies the space of a former Alūksne post office, a building showing its age with worn floors, and walls. Despite the building’s condition, and a tiny stove struggling to provide warmth in winter, the shop attracts both those seeking affordable goods and those wishing to donate items.
The documentary focuses on Ginta, the shop’s energetic and outspoken proprietor. She is described as a central figure who is equally comfortable conversing, offering criticism, and providing assistance to customers. The film highlights the contrast between this low-cost charity shop and a nearby modern supermarket, where similar items would be far more expensive.
“This place is like an island of the past next to the modern supermarket where you can buy almost nothing for 20 cents,” the documentary states, raising questions about the shop’s long-term viability in a changing economic landscape.
The “Latvijas kods” series, produced by Latvian Television (LTV), aims to showcase diverse experiences across Latvian society. This year’s cycle of films addresses themes of public health, including the challenges faced by young mothers, the impact of loneliness, and the closure of key community spaces. The series premiered on November 16th, 2024, with “Palīdzības piemineklis” as its inaugural film.
Other films in the series include “Caur bērna acīm” (Through a Child’s Eyes), directed by Gerda Jirgena; “Pastnieku gaidot” (Waiting for the Postmen), directed by Mārtiņš Grauds; “Postpartum,” directed by Katrīna Birkenberga; and “AAAAAAAAA,” directed by Dāvis Gauja. The films are available to view on LTV1 and the REplay.lv platform.
