Latvian Biathlon: Rising Stars Signal a Bright Future
Holmenkollen, Norway – A resurgent Latvian biathlon team concluded its World Cup season with a series of promising performances, signaling a potential turning point for the program after years of limited success. Rihards Lozbers, at 17 years classic, marked the culmination of the season with a 23rd-place finish in the mass start event on Saturday, March 22nd, capping a breakthrough season for the young athlete.
Lozbers’ performance in Holmenkollen followed a 21st-place finish in the sprint and 28th in the pursuit, demonstrating consistent improvement throughout the final World Cup stage. His overall World Cup ranking of 62nd, achieved despite participating in only three of the nine events, underscores his rapid ascent within the sport. This success builds on a strong showing at the World Junior Championships in March, where Lozbers and teammate Estere Volfa secured notable results, including a championship title in the mixed relay with contributions from Elza Bleidele and Matīss Meirāns.
The Latvian team’s revitalization extends beyond Lozbers. Estere Volfa, despite missing the Holmenkollen event due to illness, achieved a 50th-place overall ranking in the World Cup, and previously reached the top ten in a competition in Otepē. Renārs Birkentāls, at 24, also posted career-best results this season, securing a 43rd-place overall ranking and qualifying for a mass start event for the first time. Andrejs Rastorgujevs, a veteran of the team, finished 38th a result he acknowledged as a less successful season due to health issues that caused him to miss two World Cup stages.
Baiba Bendika, another key member of the Latvian team, achieved personal bests in Olympic distances this season, finishing 56th overall in the World Cup, an improvement over her 86th-place finish last year, though still below her career high of 30th. Despite struggles with shooting accuracy, Bendika’s overall performance reflects a positive trend for Latvian biathlon.
Latvia’s improved performance is also reflected in the nation’s ranking. The Latvian men’s team has risen three places to 15th in the world rankings, allowing them to enter four athletes in each World Cup distance next season, a return to a quota not seen for a year. The women’s team remains 18th, retaining three quota spots. The success of the younger athletes provides a foundation for continued growth, offering a buffer against the potential retirement of Rastorgujevs and Bendika after the next season, which includes the World Championships in Otepē, Estonia.
The Latvian Biathlon and Ski Association (LASI) is actively promoting the team’s achievements through social media channels, encouraging fans to follow their progress on platforms including Facebook, X, and Instagram.
