Latham & Conway Secure NZ Win Over South Africa in 3rd T20
Auckland, New Zealand – Tom Latham’s unbeaten 63 propelled New Zealand to an eight-wicket victory over South Africa in their third Twenty20 International on Friday, giving the Black Caps a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. New Zealand reached the target of 137 with 22 balls to spare at Eden Park.
Latham and Devon Conway established a commanding 96-run opening partnership, laying the foundation for a comfortable chase. Conway contributed 39 runs before being caught in the deep by Rubin Hermann off the bowling of Keshav Maharaj in the 11th over. Tim Robinson added 17 runs, and the winning run was secured with a single from Nick Kelly after the scores were level.
Earlier, South Africa managed to bat through their full 20 overs for the first time in the series, largely due to a late flourish from Nqobani Mokoena, who scored an unbeaten 26 off 20 balls in his international debut. Despite Mokoena’s contribution, South Africa struggled to build substantial partnerships throughout their innings, finishing on 136-9.
New Zealand’s bowling attack shared the wickets, with six different bowlers claiming dismissals. Mitchell Santner, the Black Caps captain, played a key role with the ball, taking two wickets and applying pressure to the South African middle order. Lockie Ferguson was particularly economical, conceding only nine runs from his four overs.
“It was a simple blueprint tonight,” Santner said after the match. “The pitch looked like it was doing a little bit early. It looked tricky and it was good the way the two boys (Conway and Latham) could soak that up. You move too hard and you lose a couple of wickets, which makes the chase a little bit challenging.”
South Africa’s innings saw a difficult powerplay, ending at 41-3, and progressed to 61-5 at the midpoint. George Linde and Gerald Coetzee briefly revived the innings with a 34-run seventh-wicket stand, but their efforts proved insufficient. Mokoena and Lutho Sipamla then combined for an unbroken 24-run partnership for the tenth wicket, setting a new record for that partnership in T20 Internationals for South Africa.
The fourth match of the series is scheduled to be played in Wellington on Sunday.
