Las Vegas: How Sports Are Supersizing the Entertainment Capital

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Las Vegas is rapidly solidifying its position as a premier sports destination, a transformation driven by the success of Allegiant Stadium and a surge in sports betting revenue. The city’s evolution, once defined by casinos and entertainment, is now increasingly characterized by a year-round calendar of major sporting events and a growing integration of sports into its core identity.

“There’s a shared pride in shaping what a sports destination can be: combining competition, hospitality, and connection,” says Sandra Douglass Morgan, president of the Raiders. Allegiant Stadium, home to the Raiders, has become a focal point of this ambition. The stadium’s distinctive design, featuring a jet-black exterior and retractable walls, has quickly become an iconic landmark, hosting events ranging from the 2024 Super Bowl to concerts by the global music sensation BTS.

The impact of Allegiant Stadium is being compared to that of The Mirage, which opened in 1989 and is widely credited with initiating the era of the Las Vegas mega-resort. “It’s the difference between hosting a 20,000-person boxing match and a 70,000-person football game,” according to industry analyst Roger Hill.

This expansion is set to accelerate. By 2028, a new 30,000-seat baseball stadium will be completed on the site of the former Tropicana hotel. The combination of baseball and football seasons is projected to create a near-constant stream of professional sporting events, with Hill anticipating “a pro sports game every other day.”

The shift extends beyond the Strip and into Downtown Las Vegas. Circa Resort & Casino’s Stadium Swim offers a unique viewing experience, with six heated pools arranged like an amphitheater, allowing fans to watch games – such as those of the Vegas Golden Knights – while enjoying poolside service. Below Stadium Swim lies what is billed as “the world’s biggest sports book,” a three-story space designed to accommodate a large number of bettors.

Sports books, once considered ancillary features of casinos, have become central to Las Vegas’s evolving identity. Lamarr Mitchell, director of trading at BetMGM, notes that sports betting has moved beyond being merely an amenity to becoming a significant driver of revenue. “Sports betting used to be an amenity; now it moves the needle,” he says.

Hill emphasizes that sports are not intended to replace Las Vegas’s traditional attractions but rather to amplify them. The day after a Formula 1 race, fans were already transitioning to other entertainment options. One group, having skipped the race itself, reported having dinner at Mother Wolf, partying at Liv, and finishing the night with breakfast at Eggslut, describing the experience as “fucking great.”

The Las Vegas HBCU Classic, championed by Sandra Douglass Morgan and the Raiders, further exemplifies the city’s broadening appeal and commitment to inclusivity, according to reports from Sports Illustrated and VIBE. Morgan’s leadership has been recognized with a 2025 VenuesNow All-Star cover, highlighting her role in steering the Raiders and shaping the city’s sports landscape.

The ongoing development of Allegiant Stadium and the influx of major sporting events have significantly boosted Las Vegas tourism, according to Travel Weekly. The city continues to redefine itself, blending its established entertainment offerings with a growing and dynamic sports culture.
