Lara Trump Warns Iran War Could Cost Republicans the Midterms
Lara Trump stated on a YouTube broadcast that the ongoing war with Iran could cost Republicans control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections, marking a rare acknowledgment of political risk from a member of the president’s inner circle, Business Insider reported.
Political Realities of the Iran Conflict on the Midterm Elections
The intersection of military action and domestic electoral politics came to the forefront as administration allies began addressing the mounting costs of the conflict. Speaking on the show “Harry Cole Saves the West” hosted by British journalist Harry Cole, Lara Trump—wife of Eric Trump and former co-chair of the Republican National Committee—addressed whether the prolonged military campaign could damage the president’s legacy.
She added that while she believes Donald Trump will go down in history as one of America’s greatest presidents, “the last two years really matter.”
The conflict, which began in late February, has triggered economic fallout that directly impacts American households. According to estimates from Moody’s Analytics in June, the war cost U.S. households $100 billion in its first three months, averaging nearly $750 per household due to inflation and rising energy prices driven by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump Weighs War Impact on Republican Electoral Strategy
President Donald Trump addressed his daughter-in-law’s assessment during a White House appearance on Thursday, telling reporters that “it’s possible” the war could hurt Republicans, while simultaneously arguing that it “should help” because a unified global consensus opposes a nuclear-armed Iran.

“So when you say, ‘Is it OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon?’ I would say 100% of the people say no, including worldwide,” the president said. “So when you say it that way, it would help. If you don’t say that, it could hurt.”
Newsweek noted that Lara Trump maintained that losing congressional majorities would be a price worth paying if it prevents Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, stating that a nuclear-armed Iran presents a global threat that supersedes the partisan balance in the House or Senate.
This messaging diverges from Vice President JD Vance’s stance in September. When asked if the conflict would conclude before the midterms, Vance declined to classify the situation as a war, cited the accomplishments of Operations Midnight Hammer and Epic Fury, and told questioners to direct inquiries to Iranian leadership.
Voter Sentiment and Economic Pressures in Close Congressional Races
Public opinion polling indicates a sharp downturn in support for the military campaign as voters grapple with inflation at the grocery store and higher prices at the gas pump. An Economist/YouGov poll conducted between September 18 and 21, found that 57 percent of Americans believed entering the war was the wrong decision, with 61 percent favoring an immediate negotiated end to the conflict.
A Fox News poll released on September 17 similarly reported that 60 percent of respondents opposed the military action. While Republican voter support remains higher than Democratic support, it has declined from 68 percent in April down to 53 percent by September.

“The Iran War and resulting inflation at the gas pump and causing high prices at the grocery store may be the deciding factor in close races this midterm,” Brian Darling, former counsel for Senator Rand Paul, told Newsweek. He added that the conflict currently acts as a drag on Republican prospects for retaining the Senate.
Lara Trump also asserted during her interview that Iranian officials are intentionally “holding out” on a diplomatic solution until after the U.S. midterm elections in hopes of securing a strategic advantage, describing the regime as difficult negotiators.
“I still say he’s going to go down in history as one of the greatest presidents, if not the greatest America has ever seen—but you’re right, the last two years really matter.”
