Lanzarote: 130 Residents Received Red Cross Aid in 2025

A total of 130 residents of Lanzarote required assistance from the humanitarian organization Cruz Roja (Red Cross) throughout 2025, according to data released by the organization. The majority of aid provided consisted of hygiene kits for domestic and personal employ, but also included financial assistance to cover monthly expenses related to housing and utility bills.

Cruz Roja operates on the island with financial support from the Government of the Canary Islands. Across the wider Las Palmas province, a total of 2,477 vulnerable families needed support from the organization during the same period. The organization reported that most individuals served were located in Gran Canaria, attributed to both its larger population and increased financial backing from the Gran Canaria Cabildo (island council). Lanzarote ranked second, followed by Fuerteventura.

Throughout the past year, Cruz Roja provided eight monthly payments to combat residential exclusion for five different individuals on Lanzarote. This contrasts sharply with Gran Canaria, where 288 payments were made to 139 people and Fuerteventura, which saw 27 payments distributed among 12 individuals.

On Lanzarote, Cruz Roja did not distribute food vouchers, citing existing coverage from other island organizations. Although, the organization did provide financial aid to nine families to cover water and electricity costs, alongside the distribution of 120 hygiene and cleaning product kits.

Recent reports indicate a broader crisis regarding migration to the Canary Islands. According to El País, approximately 1,000 migrants have died at sea so far this year, raising concerns about the precarious conditions of the vessels used. Separately, the Fiscalía de Las Palmas (Public Prosecutor’s Office of Las Palmas) has been separating migrant children from their mothers for up to two months whereas awaiting DNA test results, as reported by elDiario.es. Meanwhile, seventeen municipalities across the Canary Islands are on red alert due to a heatwave posing health risks, according to the Canarian Weekly.

The Spanish government is also taking steps to strengthen the country’s electrical grid, according to a statement from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). The government aims to increase the resilience of the energy transport network.
