Lando Norris Beats George Russell to Dutch GP Pole After Rain Scramble
McLaren driver Lando Norris secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort with a lap time of 1:11.163, edging out Mercedes rival George Russell by 0.102 seconds during a chaotic qualifying session marked by an unexpected threat of rain.
Zandvoort Qualifying Sinks Under Weather Anxiety
Heading into the final phase of qualifying, paddock radar and team meteorologists triggered a frantic rush across the pit lane. Anticipating a heavy downpour, competitors abandoned standard run profiles to bank times early. According to Yahoo Sports coverage, teams scrambled out of the garages well ahead of schedule, with Mercedes driver George Russell aggressively cutting ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri on pit exit and battling Norris on the out lap to secure optimal track position.

That track-position scrap proved decisive for the front row, yet the anticipated deluge never materialized beyond a few light spots on driver visors. Norris capitalized on the urgency, acknowledging that his flying lap required an aggressive approach that pushed his equipment to the limit. It was a lap where I just felt I had nothing to lose and it just paid off, Norris said, noting that cool track temperatures from the mist may have even aided tire performance.
Grid Breakdown and Tactical Missteps Down the Order
While Norris claimed the top spot, minor errors altered the remainder of the top ten grid. Russell blamed a mistake at Turn Eight for overheating his tires on his final run, locking him into second place with a +0.102-second gap. Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli recovered from an earlier gravel excursion to take third, finishing 0.031 seconds behind Russell. Oscar Piastri rounded out the second row for McLaren in fourth, just 0.142 seconds off the pace.

Lewis Hamilton timed his final run to perfection, pipping teammate Charles Leclerc to secure fifth. The Ferrari duo locked out the third row ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who starts seventh at his final home grand prix before the event is removed from the Formula 1 calendar. Liam Lawson, stepping in for Isack Hadjar after the Frenchman broke his wrist, delivered an impressive qualifying campaign to take eighth, finishing a mere 0.0115 seconds behind Verstappen. Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi and Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls completed the top ten.
Further down the grid, Aston Martin endured a disastrous session despite upgrades to their Honda power unit. Fernando Alonso complained of a messy out lap and locked up at Turn One, ultimately tumbling to 18th place.
