Landfill Fire in Partizánska Ľupča: Residents Warned to Close Windows | Slovakia News
A fire broke out at a waste disposal site in Partizánska Ľupča, a village in the Liptovský Mikuláš district, on Friday, prompting a large response from emergency services, according to the Žilina regional directorate of the Fire and Rescue Service (HaZZ).
Firefighters from Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok, and Žilina, totaling 19 personnel, are battling the blaze with nine firefighting vehicles. Members of the voluntary fire departments from Partizánska Ľupča, Likavka, Liptovské Sliače, Liptovská Ondrašová, and Liptovský Trnovec, as well as the Safirs Mondi SCP factory fire brigade, are also assisting in the effort.
Due to concerns about the spread of combustion byproducts into the air, the local municipality issued a safety warning to residents. The village of Partizánska Ľupča urged citizens via social media to close windows and avoid public spaces until further notice. “Dear fellow citizens. Due to the fire at the municipal waste landfill, we ask you to close windows in your homes and, if possible, refrain from staying in public areas until further notice, for the protection of your health,” the message read.
As of 7:50 PM local time, HaZZ reported that the fire had been contained using two B streams, three C streams, and one high-pressure stream, while simultaneously dismantling and covering the waste with earth. Air quality measurements taken at the scene showed no harmful levels of pollutants, according to a HaZZ social media update. Firefighting operations are ongoing.
