Luka Dončić Attributes lakers’ Loss to Suns to Personal Turnovers
Phoenix – Luka Dončić took obligation for the Los Angeles Lakers‘ 122-119 loss to the Phoenix Suns on tuesday night, citing his nine turnovers as a critical factor in the outcome. Despite a strong individual performance with 38 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists, Dončić acknowledged the impact of his miscues, which fueled the Suns’ fast-break offense.
The Lakers, currently 15-5, saw a meaningful advantage for the Suns in transition play, with Phoenix outscoring L.A. 28-2 in fast-break points. This disparity was directly linked to the Lakers’ 17 total turnovers, many of which resulted in rapid scoring opportunities for the Suns. The loss comes as the Lakers face a challenging stretch of games against teams with winning records, beginning with a road trip to Toronto, Boston, and Philadelphia.
“Turnovers, transition points,” LeBron James stated when asked about the loss. “And obviously, on our home floor and against a disruptive defense like that, you can’t turn the ball over that much. And they were pretty much all pick-sixes. They not only turned us over, they were able to convert.”
The Suns’ defensive strategy, focused on physicality and forcing the Lakers into the paint, proved effective in disrupting the Lakers’ offense. According to former NBA player J.J. Redick, the Suns didn’t rely on complex schemes, instead utilizing the size of Mark Williams, who has the second-highest standing reach in the NBA,to clog the paint.
Dillon Brooks led the Suns with 33 points, while Collin Gillespie added 28. LeBron James finished with 10 points,3 assists, and 3 turnovers, extending his streak of scoring in double figures to 1,297 consecutive games with a three-pointer in the fourth quarter. The Lakers will need to address their turnover issues as they prepare for a challenging four-game stretch against above-.500 opponents.
