Lakers vs Pistons: Doncic Returns as Hachimura & Smart Sit Out

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic will be available for Monday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons after the NBA rescinded his 16th technical foul of the season, a decision announced Sunday. However, the Lakers will be without forwards Rui Hachimura and guard Marcus Smart due to injuries, potentially impacting their pursuit of a 10th consecutive win.

The NBA’s reversal of the technical foul, initially assessed during Saturday’s 105-104 victory over the Orlando Magic, clears Doncic to play against the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons. The technical was issued after a verbal exchange with Orlando’s Goga Bitadze, but the league determined it was not warranted upon review, according to the Associated Press.

Despite the positive news regarding Doncic, the Lakers face challenges with key players sidelined. Hachimura and Smart will both miss the game due to unspecified injuries, leaving a void in both scoring and defensive capabilities. The absence of Smart, in particular, will be felt given his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities.

“We’ve had a number of things happen in the last couple of weeks, we’ve had a number of things happen on this road trip that has shown growth for our group,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said after the win against Orlando, as reported by the Strait Times. “We did a good job of just playing through stuff, whether it was some cold shooting, some hot shooting for them for a little stretch there, getting down, playing on the road.”

The Lakers, currently third in the Western Conference with a 46-25 record, are aiming to extend their winning streak to double digits. They will rely heavily on Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves to carry the offensive load in the absence of Hachimura and Smart. Other players on the roster are expected to see increased playing time and opportunities.

The Pistons, leading the Eastern Conference, present a formidable challenge. Detroit is coming off a December 30th victory over the Lakers, winning 128-106, a game where Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 27 points and 11 assists, while LeBron James scored 17 points on his 41st birthday, according to ESPN. The Pistons have demonstrated consistency throughout the season and will be a stern test for the Lakers’ winning momentum.

Luka Doncic is averaging 40 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists during the Lakers’ current winning streak.
