LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Lakers’ postseason aspirations hinge on the health of their key players, a sentiment echoed by both LeBron James and Luka Doncic as the team prepares to resume play following the NBA All-Star break. The Lakers return to action Friday against the Clippers at Crypto.com Arena.
Doncic, currently dealing with a left hamstring strain that limited his participation in the All-Star Game to just five minutes for Team World, offered a succinct assessment of the Lakers’ priorities. “Just probably health,” he said after the game Sunday. “We’ve been dealing with injuries a lot.”
James, who has battled his own injury concerns this season – including sciatica and left foot arthritis – was even more direct. “Most important for our ballclub right now is health,” he stated. “I can’t state it any clearer. We’re over the halfway point and it’s not been many games where we had a full roster.”
The Lakers have struggled to maintain a consistent lineup throughout the season. James missed the first 14 games, while Austin Reaves was sidelined for 19 consecutive games with a left calf strain. The limited availability of key players has demonstrably impacted the team’s performance.
When James, Doncic, and Reaves have been on the court together, the Lakers have achieved a 7-3 record. Doncic leads the NBA in scoring with an average of 32.8 points per game, while also contributing 8.6 assists. Reaves is averaging a career-high 25.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists, and James is averaging 22.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.1 assists.
Despite the injury challenges, the Lakers currently hold a 33-21 record, placing them fifth in the Western Conference, just half a game behind the Houston Rockets. James, in his 23rd season, dismissed any increased sense of urgency related to his career’s timeline. “We’re gearing up toward the postseason. It has nothing to do with that,” he said. “Same motivation. Same mind factor. We’ve gotten past the marathon and the sprint is about to start.”
The Lakers’ front office opted for a quiet trade deadline, a decision that drew scrutiny. Doncic, when asked about the team’s inactivity at the deadline, reiterated the importance of health. “I think with us three on the floor together…Like I said, we need to be healthy. But huge potential for us,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Lakers face a challenging schedule. Following Friday’s game against the Clippers, they will host the Boston Celtics on February 22. The Celtics currently hold a 35-19 record and are second in the Eastern Conference.
Deandre Ayton’s status remains uncertain as he recovers from right knee soreness that kept him out of the two games preceding the All-Star break. His health will be crucial for the Lakers’ success.
The new All-Star Game format, featuring three teams – Team World, Team Stripes, and Team Stars – in a round-robin mini-tournament, generated positive feedback. San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama’s aggressive play and intensity were credited with elevating the competitive spirit of the game. Wembanyama expressed his disappointment with defensive lapses that led to game-winning shots, stating, “It was our second time allowing a three when we shouldn’t have. I would have expected us to be smarter right here, so that was disappointing.” Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard led all scorers with 31 points.
