Lake Catholic Enhances Financial Education through Cardinal Credit Union Partnership
Lake catholic High School is bolstering its commitment to student success by offering two comprehensive finance classes, a requirement for graduation. These courses, Financial Literacy and Financial algebra, are designed to equip students with essential knowledge for navigating the complexities of personal finance and the global economy.
The Financial Literacy class delves into fundamental economic theories, exploring the roles of producers and consumers in the global marketplace. Students will gain practical skills in managing their finances, covering crucial topics such as credit, banking, insurance, and income taxes.
Financial Algebra builds upon this foundation, focusing on real-world applications of mathematics to personal finance and business. Students will apply concepts learned in Algebra 1 and Geometry to areas like personal income, taxes, checking and savings accounts, credit, loans, car leasing and purchasing, home mortgages, stocks, insurance, and retirement planning. The curriculum extends to more advanced mathematical concepts, including systems of equations for cost and profit analysis and exponential functions for interest calculations.
Further strengthening its financial education program, Lake Catholic has partnered with Cardinal Credit Union. This collaboration brings valuable real-world expertise into the classroom through the “Real Accounts, Real Learning” Financial Wellness course, delivered weekly by Cardinal Credit Union representatives.
Christine Blake, CEO of Cardinal Credit Union and a 1986 Lake Catholic graduate, highlighted the importance of financial literacy. “In todayS fast-paced world, having a solid foundation in financial literacy is more vital than ever,” Blake stated. “Financial wellness contributes to overall well-being, enabling individuals to achieve their goals, avoid debt, and build a secure financial future.”
The “Real accounts, Real Learning” course is structured to empower students with essential financial knowledge and skills, preparing them for informed decision-making and a successful future.The curriculum covers key financial concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing, credit management, and responsible borrowing. Through interactive lessons and practical exercises, students will develop the confidence to manage their personal finances effectively.
