LA Startup Uses Rocket Science to Cool Data Centers with Less Power and Water

January 30, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Karman Industries: Revolutionizing Data Center cooling with Rocket Technology

As the artificial intelligence industry booms, the environmental impact of data centers is becoming a critical concern. Karman Industries, a signal Hill startup, is tackling this challenge head-on with a novel cooling system inspired by SpaceX rocket engine technology. Their solution promises to dramatically reduce the space, power, and water consumption associated with keeping AI-powering chips running efficiently.

The Problem: AI and the Heat Challenge

High-end chips that drive artificial intelligence are incredibly sensitive to temperature. They can slow down or even shut off wholly when overheated. While optimal performance requires temperatures below 150 degrees Fahrenheit, these chips can easily exceed 200 degrees. Cooling the vast warehouses filled with tens of thousands of these chips traditionally requires substantial infrastructure, including large equipment footprints and significant water usage.

Karman’s Solution: Rocket-Powered Cooling

Karman Industries has developed a cooling system that reimagines the traditional approach. Similar to the heat pumps found in many homes, Karman’s system utilizes liquid carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. However, instead of relying on conventional fans for circulation, it employs technology derived from SpaceX rocket engines. This innovative approach offers several key advantages:

  • Increased Efficiency: The system significantly reduces electrical consumption for cooling.
  • Space Savings: Karman’s efficient pumps can decrease the space needed for data center cooling equipment by up to 80%.
  • Waterless Cooling: The system operates without using any water, addressing a major sustainability concern.

Recent Developments and Future Plans

Karman Industries recently secured $20 million in funding and is preparing to begin manufacturing its first compressors in Long Beach later this year. According to david Tearse, Karman’s CEO, the company’s core mission is to “reduce that electrical consumption of cooling so that you have the most efficient way to cool these chips.”

Key Takeaways

  • Karman Industries is developing a cutting-edge cooling system for data centers.
  • the technology leverages liquid carbon dioxide and SpaceX rocket engine principles.
  • This system promises significant reductions in energy consumption, space requirements, and water usage.
  • Karman Industries recently raised $20 million to scale production.

Karman Industries’ innovative approach represents a significant step towards sustainable AI infrastructure. As the demand for AI continues to grow, solutions like theirs will be crucial in mitigating the environmental impact of data centers and ensuring a more responsible future for artificial intelligence.
