Kyiv Sees Smoke from Major Warehouse Fire in Kyiv Oblast
A large fire erupted at a warehouse facility in the Kyiv region of Ukraine on Sunday afternoon, sending plumes of smoke visible from the capital city. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) confirmed the blaze, initially reporting a fire in the village of Pohreby, Boryspil district.
The Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA) initially addressed reports of a large-scale fire within Kyiv itself, clarifying that emergency services were responding to a warehouse fire in the Kyiv region. “Rescuers of the capital are currently involved in extinguishing a fire in a warehouse building in the Kyiv region,” the KCMA stated. “Firefighters and personnel from the Kyiv DSNS are at the scene.”
Early reports from the DSNS indicated the fire covered an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. However, later updates from the DSNS of the Kyiv region indicated the fire had spread to encompass 5,500 square meters. As of 5:08 PM local time, more than 60 firefighters and 16 units of equipment were engaged in battling the blaze, supported by local fire departments.
Pavlo Petrov, a spokesperson for the Kyiv DSNS, stated that as of early reports, there were no casualties or injuries. The cause of the fire remains unknown and the ownership of the warehouse has not yet been publicly identified.
Residents in several Kyiv districts – Desnyanskyi, Dniprovskyi, Obolonskyi, and Podilskyi – were advised by the KCMA to close windows and limit outdoor activity due to potential smoke inhalation. “We recommend residents of these districts close windows and limit their time outdoors until the air quality improves,” the KCMA stated.
Local online sources reported that smoke from the fire was visible across much of Kyiv. Images circulating online purportedly show debris carried by the smoke over the city. Firefighting efforts are ongoing.
