Kurtinaitis Announces Lithuania Roster for Arizona University Exhibition Match
The squad selection prioritizes tactical experimentation and recovery for core players following summer preparatory fixtures ahead of upcoming FIBA qualification fixtures.
- Head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis named an eight-plus-four roster comprising eight primary national team members and four reserve squad participants for the August 22 fixture in Alytus.
- Core contributors including Ąžuolas Tubelis, Dominykas Stenionis, team captain Gytis Radzevičius, and Matas Jogėla are rested following minutes in prior games against Estonia.
- The exhibition serves as a tactical test for maintaining athlete readiness and conditioning during the FIBA qualification cycle.
Roster Restructuring and Physiological Load Management
The coaching staff’s decision to alter the active lineup addresses the demands placed on athletes during international calendars. Following a physical encounter on Thursday in Kaunas where the primary national squad lost 108-110 in overtime to Estonia, management opted to institute targeted load management. According to statements provided to lrt.lt by head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis, high-minute performers such as Ąžuolas Tubelis and Dominykas Stenionis will sit out the Alytus matchup to support recovery.

To sustain competitive intensity while protecting player health, the roster integrates four from the reserve team: Nojus Radžius, Modestas Kancleris, Matas Repšys, and Ignas Urbonas. They join established senior candidates including Donatas Motiejūnas, Augustas Marčiulionis, Mindaugas Kačinas, Regimantas Miniotas, Karolis Lukošiūnas, Laurynas Beliauskas, Justas Furmanavičius, and Kristupas Žemaitis. This blend allows the staff to evaluate tactical adaptability across a broader athletic pool.
Tactical Integration and Preparatory Schedule
The Arizona program arrives in Lithuania following a schedule, having faced the Lithuanian reserve team in Jonava—where the reserves secured a 99-88 victory—and subsequently defeating Ukraine 107-85 on Thursday in Kėdainiai. For Kurtinaitis and his assistants, utilizing this sequence of games helps refine tactical execution under varying defensive pressures.

“We selected the roster so that certain players who logged heavier minutes, such as Ąžuolas Tubelis or Dominykas Stenionis who also assisted the reserve team, receive rest,” Kurtinaitis explained via osportas.lt. “Meanwhile, candidates who spent less time on the court will have the opportunity to secure additional playing minutes in Alytus. We are continuing our preparation for FIBA qualification matches, so it is important for us to involve every player and further refine tactical and other aspects.”
Following Saturday’s fixture in Alytus, the national team schedule demands rapid adaptation, with the primary squad slated to face NCAA champions Michigan in Vilnius on Sunday.
As the national program advances through its summer conditioning blocks, the emphasis remains on balancing competitive readiness with health monitoring. Integrating younger reserves into high-level international exhibitions broadens the tactical scope while safeguarding the long-term physical capital of the senior roster.
