Bad Aussee’s Historic Kurhaus Café Reborn as “Lewandofsky Temmel“
bad Aussee, September 14, 2025 – A beloved Bad Aussee tradition is being revitalized as the Kurhaus café reopens under the name “Lewandofsky Temmel,” blending a storied past with new culinary expertise. The Kurhaus itself, originally constructed in 1870 during Bad Aussee’s burgeoning tourism era, stands on the site of a medieval salt works that was relocated to accommodate the town’s evolving spa focus.
Initially operating as a restaurant with various Viennese management, the café transitioned to a Viennese Konditorei in 1900 under Leopold Steger, manager of the Vienna Café “Fenstergucker.” The name “Lewandofsky” - or “Lewan” – became synonymous with the café in 1910 when Gustav Lewandofsky I moved his business from the Lebzelterhaus to the Kurhaus, establishing a renowned coffee house culture throughout Austria.
Today, Commercial Councilor Charly Temmel and his brother Willi are continuing this legacy, adding their renowned pastry specialties and Temmel ice cream, originally from Graz and Los Angeles, to the Kurhaus’s offerings.
The Kurcafé pastry shop Lewandofsky-Temmel promises to continue a long-standing tradition of Austrian hospitality and culinary excellence.
