Former Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was formally charged on Saturday for abuse of power and obstruction in the exercise of official functions, announced prosecutor Park Ji-young at a press conference.
These charges follow his aborted attempt to impose martial law on December 3,2024,when he sent armed soldiers to Parliament to prevent elected officials from voting against his declaration.
According to the accusation, Mr. Yoon allegedly did not comply with the legal procedures required to establish a state of emergency, specifically by avoiding a meeting with the entire government office.

He is also accused of falsifying a document suggesting that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense had approved this measure.
Damaged last April, Yoon Suk Yeol had already been detained from January to March 2025, becoming the first president in office arrested in the history of Korea, before being released for a procedural defect.
He was again placed in detention on July 10 by decision of a judge fearing a destruction of evidence.
The former head of state, who refuses to present himself for interrogations as his re-incarceration, appeared on Friday before the court to request the cancellation of his arrest warrant.
Despite a pleading of more than 30 minutes, where he spoke of his “limited physical mobility and the difficulties he faced,” his request was rejected.
