man Fined for Assaulting Pregnant Partner, Damaging Property
A 32-year-old man, identified as Mr. A, has been fined 7 million won for multiple offenses, including assault adn intimidation, with the court citing the violence against his pregnant partner as a critically important factor in the sentencing.
The Chuncheon District Court, through Deputy Judge Park Hyun-jin, handed down the penalty on March 3rd. Mr. A faced charges stemming from incidents that occurred between August and December of the previous year.
One of the key incidents involved Mr. A assaulting his 31-year-old partner, Ms. B, who was pregnant at the time. This assault took place in an apartment located in Suncheon on August 12, 2023.Further details regarding the specific nature of this assault were not provided in the initial report.
In a separate incident on September 3rd of last year, at approximately 8 p.m., Mr. A allegedly threatened to kill Ms. B. The report states he held her head, struck her, and used dangerous objects to push wallpaper. The exact nature of the “dangerous objects” was not specified.
The pattern of domestic violence continued on December 2nd of the same year, around 7 p.m., within an apartment in Wonju-si. During an argument, Mr. A reportedly twisted Ms. B’s neck. He then proceeded to break her cell phone by throwing it on the floor and damaged property by using a kitchen item as a dangerous object to force open a room door.
In delivering the sentence, Deputy Judge Park highlighted the repeated acts of violence against a spouse and emphasized that the crimes committed while the victim was pregnant were particularly serious. However, the judge also acknowledged that Mr. A had admitted to most of the charges and considered it his first offense.
The prosecution has indicated its intention to appeal the first-instance ruling.
