Korean Healthcare: Senior Citizens Benefit from Annual Medical Volunteering

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

A medical volunteer team from Daejeon University’s HanGil Medical Service Corps provided healthcare services to residents of Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province, from February 10th to 12th, according to reports from local news outlet Akomnews and social media posts from the Yesan Senior Welfare Center.

The volunteer group, led by President Yu Tae-won, collaborated with the Yesan Senior Welfare Center, managed by Dongjun Sunim, to offer the winter medical services. The initiative included both initial and follow-up consultations, leading to treatments such as moxibustion, acupuncture, and cupping, alongside prescriptions for herbal remedies, as detailed in a Facebook post by the welfare center.

The services were reportedly well-received by the elderly residents, with Kim Yoon-jin, the head of the Yesan Senior Welfare Center, expressing gratitude for the “meaningful medical service” and hoping for the team’s return next year. A post on Instagram by the welfare center highlighted plans to continue providing health information to seniors through partnerships with specialized institutions.

The Daejeon University HanGil Medical Service Corps has a history of providing medical outreach, as evidenced by a previous report detailing a similar service event in Yesan County. The welfare center, established to support the elderly population of Yesan County, serves as a key partner in facilitating these health initiatives.

배웅 선임사회복지사 (Bae Woong, Senior Social Worker) of the welfare center’s welfare business division, noted the importance of continued collaboration with professional organizations to deliver necessary health information to seniors.
