Korea Veterans Affairs Launches Task Force to Improve Medical Services

March 20, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

South Korea’s Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced the launch of a “Veterans’ Medical Service Innovation Task Force” on Wednesday, aiming to address challenges facing hospitals serving the nation’s veterans. The initiative comes as aging veterans increase demand for medical care and expose operational issues within the system.

The task force, comprised of representatives from the ministry, the Korea Veterans Health Service, and the six national veterans hospitals – in Central, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Incheon – held its inaugural meeting Wednesday afternoon at the Government Complex in Sejong City. The group will operate on a bi-weekly basis, according to the ministry.

The task force is headed by the Director-General of Veterans’ Medical Welfare at the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, with participation from division chiefs from the ministry, the Korea Veterans Health Service, and planning and coordination officials from each of the six hospitals. The group will focus on identifying and resolving key issues in hospital operations, according to a ministry statement.

Recent challenges at veterans hospitals include increasing medical demands due to the aging veteran population, staffing shortages, and administrative inefficiencies. The task force will prioritize streamlining internal regulations and operational procedures to improve the quality and accessibility of care, the ministry said.

Vice Minister Kang Yoon-jin attended the first meeting, outlining the direction of the “Veterans’ Medical Solution” initiative and soliciting feedback from those present. “Even the smallest inconveniences experienced by veterans directly impact their satisfaction with medical services,” Kang said. “We will approach this with the mindset that the answers are always in the field, and we will swiftly address the issues raised by veterans’ medical facilities to ensure our national meritorious individuals receive better care and medical services.”

The task force will operate as an execution-focused consultative body, prioritizing practical solutions and timely improvements to veteran healthcare services. The ministry indicated that further meetings are already scheduled to continue the process of identifying and addressing concerns.
