Kontron Moves VX307H Defense Computing Production to Huntsville
Defense Computing Platform Production Moves to Huntsville
Defense customers are asking for greater supply-chain resilience, faster availability and closer access to support,
said Stephanie Perdue, director of products North America at Kontron, as the company brought manufacturing of its VX307H rugged computing platform to the United States for the first time.
Kontron announced that the advanced defense computing system is now being manufactured at Nextek, a Kontron company located in Huntsville, Alabama. The move establishes Huntsville as the first U.S. manufacturing location for the VX307H, marking an expansion of the company’s regional defense electronics footprint that will eventually incorporate additional hardware lines.
Manufacturing Shift for Mission-Critical Hardware
The transition moves production of the specialized platform from a traditional build-to-order model to active inventory stocking. By manufacturing the units ahead of demand, the company aims to shorten delivery schedules for military buyers requiring rapid deployment of tactical hardware.

Nextek manages the complete production sequence at its Huntsville facility, executing printed circuit board assembly alongside final integration and hardware testing. The plant maintains AS9100 and ISO 9001 certifications, operates as ITAR-registered, and adheres to IPC workmanship guidelines for high-reliability aerospace and defense components, according to coverage from Evertiq.
VX307H Platform Meets SOSA Defense Standards
Engineered for harsh operating conditions, the VX307H is a 3U VPX platform built around Intel Xeon D-2700 and D-2800 processors capable of supplying up to 20 cores. The system integrates 100 Gigabit Ethernet, PCIe Gen4 architecture, and a hardware root of trust to withstand extreme temperatures, shock, and vibration.
The platform follows the Sensor Open Systems Architecture standard, known as SOSA, to ensure interoperability across military systems. These computing cores support specialized defense functions including tactical communications, sensor fusion, command and control networks, and autonomous operations.
Future Expansion of U.S. VPX Operations
The initial production run of the VX307H serves as the foundational phase for a broader corporate strategy to localize manufacturing for defense electronics within the United States. Kontron plans to follow this rollout by shifting production of its VX3060 and VX30101 computing platforms to the domestic market.
The milestone was publicly detailed alongside the opening of the Association of the United States Army’s 2026 annual meeting in Washington, D.C. While local facilities now handle fabrication and testing, raw components for the platforms continue to be sourced globally.
