Kinnevik writes down its entire stake in Stegra to zero
Investment firm Kinnevik has written down its entire three percent stake in green steel venture Stegra to zero, reflecting a dramatic reevaluation of the portfolio company as it faces a severe financial crisis. METALLERochGRUVOR.se reported that Kinnevik has invested nearly 1,2 miljarder kronor into the enterprise since its initial backing.
Valuation Collapse and Leadership Shift at Kinnevik
The total write-down was announced alongside Kinnevik’s third-quarter interim report. Helena Saxon, who assumed the role of chief executive officer roughly two months prior, pointed directly to the steel startup during her review of a portfolio she characterized as potentially too broad. At the start of 2025, Kinnevik valued the entirety of Stegra at approximately 40 miljarder kronor. Successive financial pressures on the green steel project, however, forced multiple downward revisions before the book value hit zero.
The report triggered a steep drop for Kinnevik’s shares on the stock exchange. Saxon stated in an interview with EFN that the firm is concentrating on focus, discipline, and delivery. While acknowledging that past choices leave room for second-guessing, she emphasized that her priority centers on current execution rather than reviewing prior management decisions. Since taking the helm, Saxon has brought in executives from Investor AB to shape her six-person management team.

Kinnevik Refuses to Fund Stegra Industrial Project
Stegra requires substantial additional capital to complete its flagship industrial project in Boden. Kinnevik has explicitly confirmed it will not participate in the startup’s ongoing funding round, choosing instead to focus its liquidity elsewhere. The Wallenberg sphere remains the largest owner in Stegra, followed by private equity firm Altor. Vargas Holding, founded by financier Harald Mix, held a major stake initially but now maintains a more subdued presence. Ownership dynamics shifted significantly late last year when Al Gore’s climate fund, Just Climate, emerged as a primary stakeholder.
Kinnevik reported a modest one percent increase in net asset value during the third quarter, supported by growth across other holdings such as Enveda and Tandem Health, alongside currency tailwinds. Nevertheless, the firm carries a net cash position of 7,4 mdr kr, leaving roughly 5 mdr kvar för nya investeringar available for new investments after accounting for reserves dedicated to existing portfolio companies, according to Placera.se.

Portfolio Realignment and Future Disinvestments
Saxon addressed market questions regarding potential asset sales by noting that Kinnevik maintains dedicated resources to identify alternative owners for holdings that no longer align with its core strategy. The investment company has faced scrutiny from analysts regarding transparency and the valuation of unlisted assets. Saxon noted that shareholder agreements restrict the disclosure of detailed operational data.
While reports in Dagens Industri previously pointed toward advanced talks with private equity firm Verdane regarding a potential package transaction of portfolio assets, Saxon declined to comment on specific negotiations. She maintained that the firm will not rush transactions under market pressure. As Kinnevik works to build a pipeline of more mature European assets, the complete write-down of Stegra marks a definitive turning point in the investment company’s historical exposure to heavy industrial green transitions.
