Kings Island to revive Beloved ‘Phantom Theater’ Ride with Modern Updates
MASON, OH - August 31, 2023 – Kings Island announced today the return of the popular “Phantom Theater” interactive dark ride next spring. The ride, which operated at the park from 1992 to 2002,will feature updated technology, enhanced scenic elements, and expanded storytelling while retaining the original’s quirky characters and chaotic charm.
The revival comes as Kings Island prepares to close “Boo Blasters on Boo hill” on September 1, 2023, to make way for the new attraction.
“phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare” will immerse guests in a comedic and fast-paced adventure centered around Maestro, the theater’s resident organist, and the mischievous “ghost notes” unleashed by a lightning strike. Riders will join head usher No Legs Larry and his team in “enchanted opera boxes” equipped with spellbound flashlights to capture the ghost notes and restore order before the performance begins.
The ride will feature 26 immersive scenes, including backstage areas, haunted hallways, dressing rooms, and a fiery boiler room. Animatronic characters from the original ride-Houdelini, The Great Garbanzo, Hilda Bovine, and Lionel Burymore-will return alongside a new character, Arpeggio, Maestro’s feline companion.
Multi-sensory effects, hidden Easter eggs, and a grand musical finale will complete the experience. The attraction was created by Sally Dark Rides, a company specializing in family dark ride experiences.
“Families who have visited Kings Island will remember how special the original Phantom Theater was, and they’ve always wanted it to return,” said tony Carovillano, park manager of Kings Island, in a statement. “While paying homage to the original ride, phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare’s modern and advanced features will help create new memories and stories for all who take their seat inside this amazing experience.”
