Kim Jong Un Re-elected as North Korea’s Workers’ Party General Secretary

February 23, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Pyongyang, North Korea – Kim Jong Un was re-elected as General Secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) on Sunday, state media reported Monday, solidifying his grip on power for another five years. The decision, made on the fourth day of the party’s rare congress, was presented as the “unshakable will and unanimous desire of all the delegates,” according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The congress, held just once every five years, provides a rare window into the inner workings of North Korea’s highly secretive government. It serves as a platform for directing state policy across all sectors, from economic development to military strategy. This year’s gathering is particularly notable as Kim Jong Un previously announced it would outline the next phase of the nation’s nuclear weapons program.

During Sunday’s session, the party also approved revisions to its internal rules, aiming to “consolidate the Party ranks in a qualitative way” and enforce “impartiality in applying the Party discipline,” KCNA reported. This move suggests an effort to strengthen internal control and ideological purity within the WPK.

Kim Jong Un’s re-election comes as North Korea faces significant economic challenges, exacerbated by international sanctions. In his opening speech to the congress on Thursday, Kim acknowledged the need to improve living standards, signaling a potential shift in focus towards economic revitalization. He stated, “Today, our party is faced with heavy and urgent historic tasks of boosting economic construction and the people’s standard of living and transforming all realms of state and social life as early as possible.”

Although prioritizing nuclear weapons development for decades, Kim, who assumed power in 2011, has increasingly emphasized the importance of economic growth. At the previous party congress in 2021, he made the unusual admission that mistakes had been made in “almost all areas” of economic development, a rare display of self-criticism from the North Korean leadership.

The re-election of Kim Jong Un as General Secretary, as reported by Al Jazeera, Reuters, and DW.com, further cements his position as the nation’s paramount leader. The Sunday Guardian reported that Kim remains unchallenged, with his power “cemented for the next 5 years.” What we have is the ninth time a Workers’ Party congress has convened under the Kim family’s decades-long rule, a practice interrupted under Kim Jong Il but revived in 2016.
