Ireland Libraries Launch “Skills for Life” Initiative
Free programs will boost digital, financial, and health literacy for adults.
A new nationwide program called “Skills for Life” has been introduced by the Kilkenny County Council Library Service. The initiative aims to provide adults and young adults with crucial skills for navigating modern life, enhancing both personal and community growth.
Key Skills Targeted
The “Skills for Life” program focuses on six core competencies. These areas include:
- Digital literacy
- Financial literacy
- Media literacy
- Business and employment skills
- Health awareness
- Sustainable lifestyles and environmental awareness
Libraries as Learning Hubs
The initiative recognizes libraries as vital hubs for continuous learning. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, public libraries contribute significantly to community education, offering resources and programs that support lifelong learning (NCES, 2018).
Funding and Collaboration
Supported by funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development, the Kilkenny County Council Library Service will expand its educational offerings. The service aims to collaborate with local organizations in adult education, media, finance, business, health, and sustainability to strengthen program delivery.
Coordinator’s Vision
“Libraries have always supported life-long learning, and our libraries are trusted sources of information and places of learning,”
says Skills for Life Co-ordinator Karyn Deegan.
Deegan added, “This new initiative acknowledges the work already being done in our branches whilst providing us with the funding to offer additional programming to support a very dynamic offering in our libraries. It will also allow us to focus our efforts on new areas of need such as financial literacy and media literacy.”
Countywide Rollout
Skills for Life will be implemented across all library branches in the county. Free events, workshops, and resources will be available to empower individuals and promote a culture of continuous learning and wellbeing.
