Kieron Pollard Named MI Head Coach for IPL 2027, News18 Reports
Heading into the 2027 Indian Premier League season, Mumbai Indians appointed former West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their new head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene, News18 reported. The franchise made the leadership change following a difficult 2026 campaign where the five-time champions finished ninth on the points table with only four wins from fourteen matches.
Pollard Becomes Head Coach After Serving as Batting Coach
Pollard steps into the head coach role after previously serving as the team’s batting coach, a position he held starting in the 2023 season following his retirement from the tournament in November 2022, according to Asianet News Malayalam. Jayawardene, who previously guided the team across two separate tenures from 2017 to 2022 and again from 2024 to 2026, stepped down earlier in October, leaving the franchise searching for a fresh direction.

As a player, Pollard spent thirteen seasons with Mumbai Indians after joining the franchise in 2010. During his playing career, he contributed to five IPL title victories in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, alongside Champions League titles in 2011 and 2013, as noted by Mathrubhumi. Across 189 IPL matches, he accumulated 3,412 runs and claimed 69 wickets.
Mumbai Indians Aim to Break Six-Year Title Drought
Franchise owner Nita Ambani emphasized Pollard’s deep familiarity with the team’s culture, stating that he understands the value of the Mumbai Indians jersey and possesses the capability to implement major changes within the squad, according to Mathrubhumi. The franchise aims to break a six-year title drought, having last lifted the trophy in 2020.

According to Samayam Malayalam, the incoming head coach faces immediate roster and leadership decisions, including determining the future of current captain Hardik Pandya and addressing team dynamics following the leadership transition from Rohit Sharma. Additional strategic priorities include strengthening a bowling attack that has relied heavily on Jasprit Bumrah, alongside identifying new spin options and a wicketkeeper ahead of the 2027 auction cycle.
Player Reactions to the Appointment
Reflecting on his new assignment, Pollard acknowledged his long history with the franchise and the responsibility attached to the role. “Stepping up as the head coach of Mumbai Indians is a massive honor,” Pollard said, as cited by Asianet News Malayalam. “Having journeyed through this as a player and later as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stand for and the responsibility of wearing this blue and gold jersey.”

Pollard also expressed appreciation to the leadership group for the opportunity. “I want to thank Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani, and the entire Mumbai family for placing their trust in me. I look forward to working alongside the players and support staff, upholding our legacy, nurturing our young talent, and delivering many moments for our fans to celebrate,” he stated, via Asianet News Malayalam.
