KIA Tigers’ Jerry Dale: Early Performance & Asian Quota Impact
Daegu, South Korea – KIA Tigers’ manager Lee Beom-ho has adjusted the batting order for his team’s March 22nd exhibition game against the Doosan Bears, dropping newly acquired Australian-born infielder Jerry Dale to ninth in the lineup. The move comes after Dale struggled through the early stages of spring training, currently batting .130, according to reports.
Dale, who represented Australia in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, was brought in to fill the void left by Park Chan-ho’s departure from the KIA infield. He was initially touted for his ability to play all infield positions and his experience, having spent time in the minor leagues with the San Diego Padres and a season with the Orix Buffaloes in Japan’s professional baseball league. He likewise impressed in the 2025 KBO Fall League, posting a .309 batting average.
However, Dale’s performance in the current spring training has fallen short of expectations. Through 11 games, he has recorded just four hits in 31 at-bats, resulting in a .129 batting average. On March 21st, he went hitless in five at-bats, and a failed bunt attempt further highlighted his struggles, according to OSEN.
Despite the recent slump, manager Lee Beom-ho remains confident in Dale’s potential. “He seems to be feeling the pressure as it’s his first time playing here,” Lee said, as reported by OSEN. “I think he’ll adjust and start hitting well eventually. That’s why I’ve moved him down to ninth, to give him a little space to relax.”
On March 23rd, Dale was held out of the starting lineup for the game against the Samsung Lions, with manager Lee citing a desire to observe Park Min at shortstop. Dale is batting .115 through nine spring training games (26 at-bats, 3 hits), with no RBIs. Lee emphasized that spring training performance isn’t necessarily indicative of regular season success, stating, “It’s still early. If he does well in spring training, that might be more concerning. We find bound to be slumps during a 144-game season.”
The KIA Tigers are scheduled to continue their spring training schedule, with the team evaluating Dale’s progress as they prepare for the upcoming KBO season.
