KI Researchers Awarded Grants for Rheumatic Disease Research

Stockholm, Sweden – Four junior researchers at Karolinska Institutet (KI) are set to ‍receive a combined SEK 2 million in funding ⁢from the Rheumatics Association to advance research into ‍rheumatic system diseases. The ⁣three-year grants, totaling SEK 500,000⁢ each, will support investigations into conditions including systemic sclerosis, myositis, vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Sjögren’s disease.

The ⁢Rheumatics Association’s ⁢targeted ‍investment aims to bolster the careers of early-career scientists establishing independent research programs. All four recipients ⁤are affiliated with the ‌Department of Rheumatology at KI’s ⁣Department of ⁢Medicine Solna and are members of ‍Per-Johan Jakobsson’s research group,focusing on chronic inflammation with a specialization in rheumatology‌ and cancer. This initiative complements the Association’s annual ‍open call for research grants.

The funded projects include:

  • How the immune system affects the muscles of cancer ⁢treatment – ⁤a survey with advanced⁢ analysis

  • Mechanisms for tissue damage at idiopathic inflammatory myopathies

  • Improved understanding of systemic lupus erythematosus through​ organ -specific molecular profiling (resolve)

  • Inhalation muscle training in‌ rheumatic system disease
    Henrik Pettersson
