Stockholm, Sweden – Four junior researchers at Karolinska Institutet (KI) are set to receive a combined SEK 2 million in funding from the Rheumatics Association to advance research into rheumatic system diseases. The three-year grants, totaling SEK 500,000 each, will support investigations into conditions including systemic sclerosis, myositis, vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Sjögren’s disease.
The Rheumatics Association’s targeted investment aims to bolster the careers of early-career scientists establishing independent research programs. All four recipients are affiliated with the Department of Rheumatology at KI’s Department of Medicine Solna and are members of Per-Johan Jakobsson’s research group, focusing on chronic inflammation with a specialization in rheumatology and cancer. This initiative complements the Association’s annual open call for research grants.
The funded projects include:
- How the immune system affects the muscles of cancer treatment – a survey with advanced analysis
Angeles Shunashy Galindo Feria - Mechanisms for tissue damage at idiopathic inflammatory myopathies
Begum Horuluoglu - Improved understanding of systemic lupus erythematosus through organ -specific molecular profiling (resolve)
