Khamenei Burial & Iran Attacks: Latest Updates | Middle East Crisis

March 4, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

A fire erupted near the U.S. Consulate in Dubai following a drone attack, coinciding with reports of significant damage to the Golestan Palace in Tehran, Iranian state media reported Wednesday. The attacks come amid heightened regional tensions and following the death of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, who is being buried in his hometown of Mashhad, though a specific date for the burial has not been announced.

Iranian sources indicate the Golestan Palace sustained serious damage from the aerial assault, with ceilings collapsing and glass windows shattered. The palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, formerly served as the official residence of the Qajar dynasty and was used for official receptions during the Pahlavi era, including the coronations of Reza Khan in 1925 and his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1967. Between 1925 and 1945, a substantial portion of the palace complex was demolished to craft way for modern urban development. Today, it houses a museum displaying ceramics, jewelry, and weaponry.

The Golestan Palace’s historical significance stems from its origins as part of the Arg, the ancient citadel of Tehran, built during the Safavid dynasty and later renovated by Karim Khan-e Zand. Aga Mohammed Khan designated Tehran as the capital, establishing the citadel as the seat of the Qajar rulers. Haji Abol-hasan Mimar Navai extensively remodeled the palace in 1865, shaping it into its present form.

The attacks on both the U.S. Consulate and the Golestan Palace occurred against a backdrop of escalating conflict, with reports indicating a potential war between the U.S. And Israel against Iran in 2026. The timing also follows the recent death of Ayatollah Khamenei, whose funeral arrangements are underway in Mashhad.

No official statement has been released regarding the perpetrators of the attacks or the extent of the damage beyond initial reports from Iranian state media. The U.S. State Department has not yet commented on the incident in Dubai.
