Keyla Richardson’s ‘American Idol’ Performance Earns Lionel Richie’s Highest Praise

March 24, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Lionel Richie declared Keyla Richardson’s performance of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” on Monday’s episode of American Idol the “greatest” he has ever witnessed on the show, halting the proceedings with his enthusiastic praise.

The 29-year-old Richardson, a single mother and music teacher from Pensacola, Florida, dedicated the song to those who have supported her journey, delivering a vocal performance that judge Keke Palmer described as “ancestral.” Palmer, a guest advisor, was moved to tears during rehearsals, telling Richardson, “What you’re doing is more than just singing. You’re embodying spirit through song.”

Richie, visibly emotional, struggled to articulate the impact of the performance. “I have never. I have never ever! I’ve been on American Idol since I was that big,” he exclaimed, gesturing to his youth. “I have never had any contestant walk out on this stage and tear the place up.” He continued, “The place got blown up. That Janis Joplin sounding, Tina Turner sounding. I don’t grasp who you are, but that right there was the greatest performance I have ever seen on this stage.”

Fellow judge Carrie Underwood added to the chorus of praise, noting Richardson’s ability to become fully immersed in the moment. “You don’t think about what you’re doing as it’s happening. It just flows out of you. You were in the moment, you were having fun with the audience. It was from the heavens to Keyla and then out to us. It was spectacular.” Luke Bryan echoed this sentiment, stating, “You’re just here to let what God has given you come out.”

Richardson’s powerful rendition drew comparisons to past American Idol success stories. Palmer specifically referenced Fantasia Barrino, the show’s sixth-season winner, stating, “The last time I’ve seen somebody make me feel like this and get people turned up like this, her name was Fantasia Barrino.”

Here’s not Richardson’s first experience with televised singing competitions. She was previously a Top 4 finalist on BET’s Sunday Best in 2019, and her single “So Good” subsequently reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart. She currently works as a music teacher at Life Shifting Learning Academy in Florida and leads praise and worship at her church. Her nine-year-old son, Drew, has been a consistent source of support, even briefly singing for the judges during her initial audition.

Viewers can vote for Richardson until 6 a.m. ET Tuesday, March 24, by texting 20 to 21523, visiting AmericanIdol.com, or commenting “Keyla” on American Idol’s pinned posts on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. The Top 14 contestants will be revealed during the first live show on March 30.
