Browns‘ Stefanski Addresses Decision to Not Award Game Ball to Shedeur Sanders
LAS VEGAS – Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski clarified his reasoning for not awarding a game ball to quarterback Shedeur Sanders following the team’s 17-13 victory over the las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The decision sparked online debate, notably given Sanders’ performance in relief of the injured Dorian Thompson-Robinson, where he completed 8 of 15 passes for 80 yards and one interception.
Stefanski explained that game balls are reserved for players who demonstrate extraordinary performance or embody specific team values during a game, and that while sanders showed poise under pressure, the coaching staff ultimately chose to recognize defensive end Ogbo okoronkwo for his game-changing sack and forced fumble. The incident has drawn attention to the dynamic between the coach and the high-profile rookie, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.
“It’s not a reflection of how we view shedeur,” Stefanski said. ”He came in and did a solid job in a tough spot. We just felt Ogbo’s play was particularly impactful in that game.”
Sanders, earlier this week, described his relationship with Stefanski as a typical player-coach dynamic, noting the coach provides guidance both on and off the field. “Definitely like a coach,” Sanders stated. ”He tells me what I need to do on and off the field. We’ve definitely grown. Our relationship and everything has grown, so I’m just thankful to be here.”
The Browns will continue to evaluate Sanders’ progress as the backup quarterback, with his progress remaining a key storyline for the remainder of the season. The team faces the Baltimore Ravens next, and Stefanski indicated that Thompson-Robinson’s status will determine the quarterback rotation.
