Kevin Feige Hits Back at Critics Saying Dr. Doom Needs More Buildup Than Thanos

July 26, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige addressed intense fan criticism on July 26, 2026, defending the decision to crown Doctor Doom as the next major antagonist in Avengers: Doomsday without the lengthy setup given to Thanos. Speaking with Brandon Davis during San Diego Comic-Con weekend, Feige compared the current online skepticism to the early memes surrounding Thanos during the Infinity Saga.

Deconstructing the Thanos Buildup Narrative

As reported by IGN News Editor Virginia from the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel, the debate over Victor Von Doom’s lack of onscreen runway has dominated social media discourse. Fans have questioned whether an introductory film can adequately establish Doom’s threat level compared to the multi-phase arc of Thanos. Feige pushed back on that perception by recalling how audiences initially reacted to Thanos’s early appearances.

The Thanos buildup has built up in people’s heads over the years, Feige said during his carpet interview with Brandon Davis. He sat on a chair at the end. He put on a gauntlet and said, I’ll do it myself. And he yelled at Ronin on a video screen briefly. I remember the memes making fun of Thanos. He’s just sitting in a chair. There was a Twitter feed updating every day, I’m still sitting in my chair.

The Structural Strategy for Avengers: Doomsday

Rather than mimicking the exact trajectory of Infinity War, Marvel plans to treat Avengers: Doomsday as the foundational chapter for the character. Feige outlined how the upcoming film will balance familiar comic lore with accessibility for casual moviegoers.

When we got to Infinity War we said, This is really the introduction of Thanos the people, Feige explained. That’s how that movie was built. That’s what we’re doing with Doom. Doomsday is an introduction to the story of Doom. You peel the onion, you learn things about him as you go. It’s very much meant for audiences that know and love him from the comics and audiences who have no clue who he is.

Hall H Reveals and the Future MCU Roadmap

The panel itself delivered substantial updates beyond the Doom discussion. David Jonsson appeared to massive applause to confirm his role as the next Black Panther in Black Panther III. Additionally, Marvel confirmed a new Ghost Rider feature film starring Ryan Gosling in the titular role.
