Kevin Costner is telling people he still plans to release four movies in his Horizon Western

Kevin Costner is telling people he still plans to release four movies in his Horizon Western series, despite the first film grossing $38 million worldwide in theaters and the second installment lacking a release date after sitting on a shelf for two years.

A Chance Encounter on a Weekend Shift

A user on the Reddit community r/blankies shared an unexpected meeting with Costner over the weekend. According to the post, the user crossed paths with Costner while at work and mentioned being excited for the second installment of the franchise. Costner responded with a grin, telling the fan to rewatch the first film before seeing the sequel and adding that they are ultimately going to release four movies.

The encounter mirrors commitments Costner has made since 2022, though progress on the project has slowed significantly since the first chapter arrived in theaters. Chapter 1 struggled at the box office, pulling in $38 million worldwide, but subsequently found a larger audience on Prime Video earlier this year. That digital streaming performance offers a clearer business case for future installments than the theatrical run.

Legal Disputes Freeze Release of Chapter 2

While Costner maintains optimism about the franchise trajectory, concrete release plans remain absent. In May, a Warner Bros. source stated Chapter 2 was not in the plans for release, keeping the film sidelined after its initial screenings at Venice in September 2024 and Santa Barbara in February 2025.

The delays stem largely from ongoing legal disputes that have frozen the release schedule. There are filings involving unpaid costume rentals and a separate lawsuit brought by a stunt performer. Beyond the completed second film, the future of Chapters 3 and 4 remains uncertain. Costner shot roughly a week of the third movie before production funds ran dry. Subsequent efforts to secure financing have included a pitch to officials in Saudi Arabia and discussions regarding a studio deal in Utah, though neither venture has brought cameras back to operation.
