Kerry FC manager Colin Healy celebrated his teamS remarkable 4-3 comeback victory over five-time FAI Cup winners Sligo Rovers in the quarter-finals, a result that marks a new high for the fledgling club founded in 2022.
At Mounthawk Park, Owen Elding put Rovers ahead with three goals by the 61st minute, but Kerry FC responded emphatically. Goals from Cian Brosnan (two) and Joe Adams forced the game into extra time, where Daniel Okwute secured a historic win.
“When you are 3-0 down it’s always going to be difficult, but the lads responded very, very well,” Healy told RTÉ Sport. “To come back from 3-0 down shows the strength of the squad and the character.”
Healy also highlighted his team’s physical conditioning. “We looked the fitter side and the side that was going to go and win it.Our boys never gave up and they got better and better. It’s a credit to them.”
Despite the momentous occasion, Healy quickly focused on the future. “We’ve achieved nothing yet. We’re in the semi-finals and we’ve the semi-finals to look forward to, and the players are focused on that, but it’s great for everyone at the football club.”
Healy expressed optimism about the club’s long-term potential, noting Kerry FC’s current eighth-place position in the First Division. “The club is going from strength to strength, it’s growing very, very quickly,” he said. “The support there tonight was unbelievable and it’s so significant that they’re getting behind the players.”
“The players respond to that and feed off that and we’re all in this together. It was a massive, massive performance and I’m delighted for everybody.”
A large catchment area and the abundance of playing talent within the county provide a strong foundation for future growth at kerry FC.
