Keokuk ⁢Schools Restructures Facilities for Financial Responsibility & Student Focus

KEOKUK, Iowa – The Keokuk ‍Community School District is undergoing a facilities restructuring aimed at financial responsibility and optimizing learning environments. Driven by declining enrollment and high renovation costs, the district is consolidating early childhood education and⁣ shifting grade levels.

The key changes include:

* Early Childhood Center: Preschool and kindergarten classes will be combined into⁣ an ‌Early Childhood Center located at George Washington⁣ elementary.
* Hawthorne Elementary Expansion: First grade will join grades 2-5 at Hawthorne Elementary.
* Torrence Elementary Transition: ‌The district ‌is moving out of the Torrence Elementary building, which previously housed the preschool program.
* Central⁤ Office Relocation: Human Resources, Technology, and Instructional Coaching ‌departments will move too‌ the ⁣former KAME building, joining‍ the rest of the Central Office staff.

Superintendent Dr. ‌Kathy Dinger explained ‌that initial plans for renovating the Community Health Center building for ⁤an expanded ‌preschool proved too costly, exceeding $3 million. Coupled with a 30-year trend of declining enrollment in Keokuk, the district⁣ opted for a ‌more fiscally sound approach.

“Based⁤ on projected enrollment numbers, this⁤ move should provide some consistency ⁤for years to come, save the district⁢ significant dollars in upkeep,⁢ and allow us to⁣ put some things in place at ‌George Washington to make it even more welcoming for⁣ our youngest students,” Dinger stated.

Renovations are⁣ planned for George Washington Elementary, including ‌HVAC system upgrades, bathroom improvements, and enhancements to the outdoor space, with ⁣completion anticipated by the 2026-27 school year. The district has formed committees with staff to ensure a smooth transition for students, families, and employees.

This restructuring reflects the district’s commitment ⁣to “right-sizing” while continuing to ⁢expand learning opportunities for students and families.
