Kentucky Basketball: Jason Hart Departs, Recruiting Concerns Rise for Coach Pope

March 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Kentucky men’s basketball assistant coach Jason Hart is leaving the program to become the associate head coach at SMU, sources confirmed Wednesday. Hart previously worked alongside SMU’s head coach, Andy Enfield, at USC.

The departure of Hart, who was a key recruiter for the Wildcats, significantly impacts Kentucky’s pursuit of top prospects, including five-star forward Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 ranked player in the 2026 class, and G-League Ignite star Dink Pate. Hart was considered the primary point of contact for both players, and his move to Dallas casts doubt on whether either will commit to Kentucky.

While some Kentucky fans may downplay the significance of losing Hart, his role in recruiting elite talent was crucial, particularly as Coach Mark Pope attempts to rebuild the program’s recruiting pipeline. Stokes, a highly sought-after prospect, recently visited Kentucky, but his relationship with Hart was a central component of the Wildcats’ pitch. Pate, a professional player bypassing the traditional college route, similarly had a strong connection with the Kentucky assistant.

The timing of Hart’s departure is particularly challenging for Pope, who is navigating his first offseason as the head coach of the Wildcats. With Otega Oweh having entered the transfer portal, Kentucky is in need of frontcourt reinforcements. Landing Stokes or Pate would have immediately addressed that need and provided a cornerstone for the program’s future. Without Hart’s established relationships, securing either player will be considerably more tough.

Hart’s departure is the first major staff change under Pope, signaling a broader overhaul of the Kentucky basketball program. The Wildcats will now be tasked with finding a replacement who possesses a similar recruiting acumen and can quickly establish relationships with top high school and G-League players. Recruiting has been a point of criticism for Pope early in his tenure, and finding a capable replacement for Hart is paramount to addressing those concerns.

The move to SMU reunites Hart with Enfield, where the two previously worked together at USC. While Hart’s time at Kentucky was relatively short, his impact on the program’s recruiting efforts was undeniable. His departure leaves a void that Pope must fill quickly if the Wildcats hope to remain competitive in the increasingly cutthroat world of college basketball recruiting.

As of Wednesday evening, neither Kentucky nor SMU had released official statements regarding Hart’s departure and appointment. The search for Hart’s replacement in Lexington is expected to start immediately.
