Kenneth Newton and Melanie James jailed for life for murdering Rubin Blount

A Prolonged Campaign of Abuse in Tamworth

Rubin Blount died on November 30, 2022, three days after arriving at a hospital in cardiac arrest, severely dehydrated and malnourished. Stafford Crown Court heard that Blount, who was described by prosecutor Jennifer Josephs KC as considerably mentally impaired and unable to speak for himself, suffered extensive physical abuse while living at an address in Tamworth with his stepbrother Kenneth Newton and Newton’s partner, Melanie James.

During the sentencing hearing, the court was told that the defendants subjected Blount to extreme conditions. He was forced to stand for long periods of time, left to lie in his own urine, and compelled to eat out of bins. Newton and James filmed themselves mocking and abusing the vulnerable victim. Mrs Justice Jefford noted that the couple were in a position of trust which they abused, demonstrating an abject failure to help him when he was in pain and suffering.

Extensive Injuries Detailed by Medical Evidence

Doctors examining Blount discovered a catalog of severe trauma. He suffered extensive pneumonia, a severe infection, burns, lesions, and grazes, alongside fractures to his ribs and spine. Out of 50 total rib fractures discovered, 47 had been inflicted in the weeks leading up to his death.

Jennifer Josephs KC told the court that Blount must have been in extreme pain and suffering before his death, adding that the couple denied him access to medical care until he was beyond help. The prosecutor stated that Blount’s death was the culmination of a prolonged course of conduct perpetrated against a man unable to defend himself.

The judge highlighted a series of videos recorded by the defendants on 2 November 2022, which showed Blount emaciated, gaunt, stooped, and broken, standing in a doorway while the pair hurled abuse at him. The first 25 rib fractures were inflicted before or shortly after that recording was made.

Defense Arguments and Family Impact

During the proceedings, Melanie James sobbed as details of the months-long violence were laid out. Rebecca Wade KC, defending James, acknowledged that no one could fail to be disgusted by her actions, noting that James had a difficult life of her own. Wade added that there was some evidence James had once cared for and loved Blount, but that something shifted due to her inability to cope with the stresses and strains of life, to Blount’s severe detriment.

Mark Heywood KC, defending Newton, argued that Blount was, through no fault of his own, a challenging person to care for. He stated that the circumstances leading to the death could not be dealt with simply by saying Blount was financially advantageous or a burden, asserting instead that the couple were ill-equipped.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Blount’s mother, Jeanette Blount, shared the family’s deep anguish. “We all believed they loved him and would take care of him. We had no reason to believe otherwise,” she said, adding that her son was vulnerable and deserved compassion, dignity, and a chance to live his life.

Speaking outside the court following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald condemned the actions of the convicted pair. “The extent of the injuries Rubin suffered, the state that he was in and the arrogance [of the defendants] in the way they thought they could try and get away with it and blame him for his injuries was shocking and very, very distressing,” DCI Fitzgerald said.
