Keane: Iran is a ‘Pathological Liar’ as US Diplomacy Faces Skepticism
President Donald Trump’s administration is pursuing diplomatic avenues with Iran, even as military options remain on the table, according to assessments shared Tuesday by retired Gen. Jack Keane. The discussions, occurring through intermediaries, come as a self-imposed five-day deadline set by the President approaches and amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Keane, a senior strategic analyst for Fox News, expressed deep skepticism about the likelihood of Tehran adhering to any agreement reached through negotiation. “I’m highly skeptical… This is a regime for 47 years. They are pathological liars and they’re cheaters… It’s very difficult to take them at their word,” Keane said during an appearance on FOX Business’ “Mornings with Maria.”
The administration is attempting to leverage diplomatic pressure to achieve outcomes that could otherwise be accomplished through military force, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. Keane indicated that U.S. And Israeli military leaders are confident in their ability to achieve these objectives if necessary. “If we can do that through negotiations… And we absolutely are confident that it’s real… It remains to be seen,” he stated.
The negotiations are unfolding against a backdrop of conflicting public statements from both the U.S. And Iran regarding whether talks are actually taking place. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) discussed the President’s strategy as lawmakers consider a $200 billion Pentagon funding bill.
Keane suggested that Iran’s primary motivations in any potential deal would likely revolve around regime survival, economic recovery, and the lifting of sanctions. He cautioned that the specifics of any agreement would need to be carefully scrutinized. “We’ll spot what this deal really entails when we acquire down to the specifics,” he said.
The situation is further complicated by a growing alliance between Russia and Iran, a development Keane highlighted as a significant concern. Approximately 3,000 paratroopers and Marines are reportedly on standby, according to Fox News reporting, as tensions continue to rise.
According to reporting from The Hill, Keane stated Monday that the Iranian government “fundamentally miscalculated” President Trump. He has also publicly expressed “complete confidence” in the President’s handling of the situation, as reported by Fox News on March 23, 2026.
